Homeowners Insurance Insures Your Largest Asset
We aren’t homeowners insurance agents and can’t advise you regarding how much insurance you should or shouldn’t have but we think it’s pretty important to make sure that one of your largest assets is protected in the event of an unexpected event. Whether you’re buying, selling, or staying put, it’s important to make sure that you’re covered. We recommend using an insurance agent as then you’ll have someone in your corner who is working to earn your business and earn the business of your friends and family. An agent will make sure that you’re covered, look into the discounts that you may be eligible to received and advise you about coverage items that you may or may not want to include.
Your insurance agent is going to ask you about your roof, the age of the roof, type and whether or not your have a wind mitigation report that will tell the insurance company about any hurricane protection credits that need to be issued. The size of your home is also another item that they need to know about as well as the home location and what flood zone you may be located in as well. If you don’t know your flood zone, don’t worry because most competent agents are able to locate that information or work with you to get an elevation certificate which will have that information provided by a surveyor. If you’re told you’re in a flood zone that you don’t agree with, sometimes it’s worth spending the extra money to get a personalized elevation certificate that will let you know exactly what flood zone you’re in.
While you’re considering homeowners insurance, you may also want to take into consideration getting some life insurance in case the unexpected happens and there’s an outstanding mortgage obligation on your home. It’s another great way to make sure that your loved ones are taken care of if you’re not there to assist them.
