Apply for Homestead Exemption in Naples: Save on Property Taxes

It’s time to homestead your Naples home and reduce your tax bill on your real estate.  Why apply for homestead in Naples?  Florida offers numerous benefits to homesteading your property.  First and foremost, you get a discount off your tax bill with the first $50,000 of value being subtracted from the taxable base.

If you bought a home with us in 2013 and are a Florida resident, you have until March 31, 2014 to apply for your homestead exemption at the Collier Appraiser’s Office.  If you plan on becoming a resident by the end of March, you are also eligible for homestead in Naples.  Remember, Florida doesn’t have any particular rules regarding residency other than that you get your voter’s registration card (if you vote) and change the tags on your car to Florida tags but the state that you are coming from may have rules regarding the switch and minimum mandatory amount of time spent in your new home state.

Here’s what you need to bring with you to homestead your Naples home, all of the following items are required as proof of legal residence:

  1. Evidence of ownership (deed, tax receipt, etc.)
  2. Social Security numbers for all owners
  3. Collier County Voter Registration (if you vote) dated prior to January 1st
  4. Florida Driver License dated prior to January 1st
  5. Florida Vehicle Registration dated prior to January 1st

Optional: Declaration of Domicile filed with the Clerk of the Circuit Court prior to January 1st of the year of application. You must have legal and equitable title to the property and reside in the property as your primary residence as of January 1st.

Additional information may be necessary:

  1. If not a U.S. citizen, a resident alien “green” card.
  2. If your property is held in trust, a complete copy of the trust agreement.
  3. If your residence is a mobile home, the realestate property decal number and a copy of the registration or title to the mobile home.
