Hurricane season has begun but it’s not just for us down here in Florida, it’s for the entire East Coast and the West Coast. As we’ve seen in past years, places like New Jersey can be hit and hit hard, sometimes even harder than those of us living here in Sunny Florida.
It’s important to be prepared but not overly frightened by hurricanes. Make a plan, have an inventory and emergency supplies for you and your loved ones. Here’s a hurricane checklist of items that may be handy to have in the event that a storm is heading our way:
Your hurricane checklist of supplies should include:
Flashlights, batteries, battery powered radios, extra fuel for your car/generator, water containers, chlorine bleach, ziplock bags, garbage bags, CASH, and a basic tool kit. Matches, lighters, important documents in safes or plastic bags, grill, extra propane, paper plates and utensils.
You’ll need a non-perishable food supply. It’s not the end of the world so you probably don’t need a month’s worth of food. A week of dried or non-perishable food, bottled water (2 gallons/day/person), canned food, dried food, fruit, vegetables, water tablets or straws, and any other non-perishable food supplies you consider necessary. That should cover you and your family until the emergency passes.
Toiletries: Personal hygiene and health is still important to maintain. You may need rain gear, rubber boots, medications, toilet paper, extra clothes, towels, laundry detergent, soap and other hygiene items you can’t live without that are non-perishable.
If you have an infant, don’t forget extra formula, diapers, medications and baby foods. And let’s not forget our pets. Any pet medications or supplies, food, water and items like leashes and dishes will be important to have as well.
Hopefully you won’t need any of these supplies this season but just in case, it never hurts to be prepared.
